Cayman footballers win scholarships

Seven of the nine football players were presented to
the crowd on Sunday

Nine footballers aged 16 to18-years-old were formally congratulated for
receiving football scholarships at the Cayman Islands against Tivoli Gardens
football match, at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex on Sunday.
Ivy League scholarship recipients from The Academy Football club are Machel
Turner and Wade Evans, with scholarships to Hotchkis Boston College; Mikail
Turner who goes to Episcopal; Andre Gooden and Malcolm Forbes for Cheshire
College, Connecticut;
Joseph Tatum, who was in Brazil on CIFA’s exchange programme with Vasco da
Gama Football Club and not at Sunday’s event, goes to St Georges College, Rhode
Island.
Carl and Carlos Morgan from The Academy and George Town’s Mitch Williams
received University scholarships for Lindsey Wilson College in Kentucky.
Bodden Town’s Craig Bodden and Tevon Levine gained entrance to Cheshire.
The footballers will leave to pursue further studies in August and September.
Those offering congratulations to the players were Minister of Community
Services, Youth, Sports and Gender Affairs, Dr the Hon Frank McField; CIFA
President, Mr Jeffrey Webb; President of Bodden Town, Mr Mark Scotland;
Technical Director of The Academy, Mr Winston Chung; and Tivoli Gardens
President and Jamaican Opposition Leader, the Hon Edward Seaga.
Mr Webb said: “Like players such as Lee Ramoon, Neil Murray, Frederick Wilks,
Michael Myers, Carlos Welcome, Anthony Ramoon, Michael Wilks and others who
preceded them, these young men will now be able to climb the ladder of success
academically.”
Mr Webb added that footballers are following others at overseas Universities
such as Ian Lindo, John O’Neil, Justin Pierre, Tuda Murphy, Junior Hurlstone,
Otis Myles, Ariel Tatum, Trevor Gibbs, Andres Webb and Jermaine Johnson.
CIFA, Mr Webb added has always had a primary focus on steering Caymanian
youth towards making use of their sporting ability to make them better persons
overall, and to succeed academically.
Mr Chung said: “I believe the problems that wayward young people experience
can be fixed with greater investment instrong athletic and educational
programmes for the youth.
“I would encourage the private sector to play its part in the process of
building the environment in which they too operate by investing in young
people.”
Commenting on government support he added: “It is clear that this government
believes this with the same conviction we do in the sporting fraternity.”
Dr the Hon Frank McField congratulated the youngsters saying the Ministry,
and Cayman is proud to again congratulate young Caymanians who have shown
dedication and discipline to achieving excellence in sport with an ultimate goal
of obtaining higher academic qualifications.
