Status Recipients Informed By Mail
Wednesday, August 25, 2004
The Immigration Department began mailing out confirmation to the 600
residents who have been granted Caymanian Status last Friday.
These grants were awarded from among the 1,116 applications the Caymanian
Status and Residency Board received up to 30 December 2003, the final day for
making applications. This was the final quota of grants under the old law. The
new law has no provisions for further quotas
Under the new Immigration Law, which became operative on 1 January of this year,
applications for Caymanian citizenship will now be considered under a term
entitled ‘Right to be Caymanian’.
The categories for grants under this new clause will be right of descent from
a Caymanian grandparent or parent; by marriage after seven years (the previous
qualification was five); and following naturalization.
One can become a resident after legally residing in Cayman for eight years,
and can then apply for naturalization.
Upon receipt of naturalization, one can then apply to have the Right to be a
Caymanian.
