Where and how to vote in Election 2004
Wednesday, August 25, 2004
There are 17 polling divisions situated throughout the six electoral
districts of the Cayman Islands, and by the day of the election, all registered
voters should have received an electoral registration card, which tells them
where to vote.
Based on the area where an elector lives, the Elections Office assigns all
residents who have the right and have registered to vote a polling division. On
Election Day the card will indicate where a voter should go to physically cast
their vote.
The presiding officer, after seeing the Elector’s Registration card or other
form of identity, will provide the voter with the all-important ballot paper and
give instruction on voting procedures.
Each voter then enters a poll booth and marks their ballot paper by putting a
cross (X) alongside the candidate or candidates they are voting for.
This is known as the multiple X voting system, one used all over the world
and especially in Commonwealth nations.
In each district voters will be electing different numbers of candidates. In
North Side and East End electors will vote for only one candidate. In Cayman
Brac & Little Cayman voters can choose up to two candidates, in Bodden Town
three, and in West Bay and George Town electors may vote for up to four
candidates.
After the secret ballot has been made, voters can hand their folded ballot
paper to the presiding officer who will then detach the counterfoil and deposit
the paper in the ballot box in the voter’s presence, or the voter can place the
ballot in the box themselves.
Details of electoral districts and where electors should go to cast their
vote will also be posted on line prior to Election Day.
