CCMI Summer Camp completes its fifth year
Friday, September 3, 2004
The Central Caribbean Marine Institute’s (CCMI) Summer Sea Camp completed its
fifth year of marine conservation and marine biology activities in Little Cayman
for Caymanian High School students.
The CCMI Summer Sea Camp activities integrated the fun of science into
learning experiences in order to develop long-term, positive attitudes about
marine conservation.
CCMI said they launched the Sea Camp because the future of the coral reefs on
many Caribbean Islands will ultimately depend on the attitude of the youth of
the Islands and their knowledge of current issues and trends in the management
of these ecosystems.
The youths learn to SCUBA dive, geographical mapping techniques, and earn
specialised CCMI marine conservation certificates by completing academic
activities.
CCMI Chairman, Peter Hillenbrand, said: “These youths are the future leaders,
representatives, and policy makers for the Cayman Islands. The summer sea camp
empowers them with the knowledge and teaches them the value of sustaining the
magnificent environment of Cayman.
“Thanks to donors the students worked alongside scientists to analyze and
explore the marine environment thereby improving problem solving skills and
critical thinking.”
Cayman National Corporation President, Stuart Dac, said: “We are delighted to
provide sponsorship for the CCMI summer camp, as their imitative embraces
support for youth education in the Cayman Islands together with research and
awareness relating to the environment.
“We are also pleased to offer our support to an organisation with a base in
the Sister Islands.
“CCMI has ambitious plans for its new center in Little Cayman and we wish
them well with their endeavors which will contribute to the future well-being of
our oceans."
Local youths scholarships and goods and services were sponsored by Island
Air, Red Sail Sports, Harbour House, Auto Haus, CUC, Bank Austria, Cayman
