Police warn parents about dropping off school children
Friday, September 3, 2004
The Royal Cayman Islands Police Service (RCIP) has issued advice to motorists
to take extra care on the roads with the re-opening of government and private
schools around the Islands.
All schools have flashing lights some distance away to warn motorists that
they are entering a school zone.
Drivers should take care to watch out for and heed these warning lights.
Motorists should drive accordingly, in the school zones, paying particular
attention to pedestrians and other motorists who may be stopping to drop off
students.
Parents are also reminded to pull over to the side of the road when dropping
off children and not to stop in the middle of the road. The practice of stopping
in the middle of the road not only obstructs traffic, but also causes congestion
and is dangerous for students. Police Officers have been directed to patrol the
school areas and motorists who continue this practice are being warned that they
will be given a ticket for the offense of causing an obstruction.
The RCIP are also advising drivers to allow additional time for their journey
to work, in anticipation of the increase in traffic and possible delays caused
by the return to school.
