Caymanian Status Board releases names of 621 recipients

Tuesday, September 7, 2004

The Caymanian Status and Permanent Residency Board approved 621 people for the grant of Caymanian Status based on ordinary residency or naturalisation under the new Immigration Law.

“I am confident that as far as possible we were able to deal with and approve the final outstanding numbers of long-term residents within our community,” said Board Chairman Billy Reid.

Satisfied the board had given special consideration to applicants who had been resident here for a continuous period of 11 years or more, in particular applicants with close Caymanian connections, Mr. Reid added:
“While tedious - it was applied in a fair and equitable manner, in accordance with the provisions of the Immigration Law.”

The 621 were selected from 1,116 applications.

This last group of status grants will complete the transition to the new immigration law that came into effect January 2004. Under its terms, the Immigration Department will no longer be operating a quota system.

From now on status will be granted in accordance with the guidelines laid out in the new law, with respect to two groups:

Caymanian as of right, and Caymanian by grant of the Caymanian Status and Permanent Residency Board.

Children born inside or outside the Islands after the start of the law, who, at birth, had at least one parent settled in the Islands, or one parent who was Caymanian by descent, or other means, or any child who is the legitimate child, step-child or adopted child of a person who possesses Caymanian Status, qualifies for Caymanian as of right.

A child born out of wedlock to a Caymanian man will also have the right to be Caymanian, if the man can prove that or the court rules he is the father.
Caymanian by grant of the Caymanian Status and Permanent Residency Board is based on a number of different qualifications such as being a grandchild of a Caymanian, a British Overseas Territories citizen, as well as people married to Caymanians or surviving spouses of Caymanians.

For details regarding status grants, contact the Immigration Dept 244-2072, 949-8344 or Gazette 18 on the Government website, at www.gov.ky, select ‘Publications’.
