Reliable citizen discovers stolen van

Sharp-eyed citizen Alison receives a $500 reward from
Reliable Industries Managing Director Sharon Smith for
helping recover a van stolen from the company

Tuesday, September 7, 2004

As a result of quick thinking, faxes to the local radio stations, and a civic-minded resident of Bodden Town, a van stolen from Reliable Industries was recovered later the same day last Wednesday.

Sharon Smith, the Managing Director of Reliable Industries, discovered the van missing from behind Alissta Towers at 9 am. She quickly telephoned the police. Then, she had another idea: she faxed Vibe, Heaven 97, and Radio Cayman to see if they would announce the missing vehicle on their airwaves.

All three stations played the announcement and within a short while a woman named Alison from Bodden Town phoned in to Reliable Industries and soon the Bodden Town Police Station was notified of the stolen vehicle in their precinct.

Mrs Smith related that the funny thing was that Alison phoned in the information without hearing the part about the $500 reward. “She was quite surprised to hear about it when I offered it to her,” Mrs Smith said.
Alison was completely surprised: “I was just trying to help them out because I saw the van. I’ve never won anything in my life.”

Mrs Smith was impressed with Alison’s actions. “If anything I hope people on this island feel empowered by this story and think of all the means they have of fighting crime,” said Mrs Smith. “Alison is a great example of citizens stepping up to solve crimes on this island.”

Mrs Smith continued: “I know many times people don’t want to get involved. Alison did and saved our company time and money. We’re very thankful for her efforts.”

Radio Cayman announced the recovery of the Reliable Industries van on its 6 pm news on the same day.
