News and Information Requests from Readers

Sunday, September 12, 2004

Any readers that are able to communicate with family and/or friends in the Cayman Islands and have any news they would like to share with others, please send it to us using the form at the foot of this page.

During Monday, September 13, alone, the Cayman Net News website was accessed over 500,000 times.  This large amount of traffic has slowed the site down considerable, and has especially affected the ability of our validation software to process the number of messages being sent to us.  Please, therefore, be patient if you find that the site is not responding and try again later.

Readers submitting messages can also help by making sure they enter a valid email address to avoid our system being even further burdened by bounced messages.  Please also turn off any Spam blocker that may prevent our confirmation emails being received.  We do not have the resources to cope with the number of messages being returned for this reason alone.

We would like to automate this system in its entirety but it seems that some people still cannot resist the temptation to send inappropriate messages, even at a time such as this, requiring us to scrutinise each message before it is posted.

Would readers also please note that we cannot at this time respond to requests for individual replies with current information. Everything we know is reported on the website.

  • We talked to our daughter Kela Hamilton at 1pm Cayman time. They are in a house in South Sound. They have 5 feet of water in the downstairs. They are now in the second floor. The cars are apparently on the way to Cuba. There are 4 adults and 3 dogs in the house. All is as well as can be expected - Edgar Tirado

  • I am living in New Orleans & am trying to get any news about my Aunt (June Borden) and family. June's daughter and my cousin, Bonnie Moxan, are in Chicago trying to get home to Cayman. She is trying to hear any information about her family. They live up by Morgan’s Harbour and Uncle Bob Road. We would appreciate any information. Thank you - Paula Hydes Eicke

  • Looking to ensure safety of Sabrina and Michael Baker. He is an employee of PricewaterhouseCoopers and she is an employee of Admiral Administration on Grand Cayman - Christine Newey

  • If there is anyone reading this that has heard from others on the island, please post with comments on how things are looking and the island is doing. Specifically, if anyone has heard from people in the Strathvale House Building (on North Church St, across from Rackums) PLEASE post a comment as we have family in shelter there. Anxiously awaiting news. Thank you - Natalie Cooksley

  • We spoke to our sister very early Sunday morning; she is located in George Town. She decided to stay at one of the big hotels along Seven Mile Beach. She said the waves at that time were about 20 feet high, and there were already trees and power lines all over the streets. A lot of residents along the coast had been evacuated to shelters more inland. We were only able to catch her on her cell phone at certain times, as of about 7am this Sunday morning, we can no longer contact her - The Ders

  • How soon will electricity be re-established? How soon will the airport reopen? My wife is from Jamaica and she is there visiting a friend of hers. She was due to leave back for Jamaica today! - Sassy

  • The last time we spoke to our niece and the people she is staying with in Prospect Haven, near Tropical Gardens, they said that the water was rising in the downstairs and that smoke was coming from one of the houses close by. I also spoke to a friend in West Bay. She said she couldn't see any trees any more. She didn't know how long their house could keep the water out and didn't think that many houses would be able to last until the storm finished. That was all at about 12:30 pm Sunday. Since then the few cell phones that we could connect with in Cayman no longer work. All we can do is hope and pray. Has anyone else heard anything, in particular about the area near the roundabout at Kings Sports Centre? - Graham Manchester

  • Thank you so very much for the update on Ivan. My son and his wife and their son live in George Town and this is the first news that I have had regarding the island. The last contact that I have had with them was this morning... they were in a hotel near the airport and had taken shelter on the third floor in the corridor with many other people. I hope you can receive this e-mail and thank you again. I assume that you cannot reply but if you can it would be wonderful - Ann Phillips

  • We are also unable to get word about our family on Grand Cayman. If you get information about the safety of the Watler family in Bodden Town, please pass along our thoughts and prayers and let us know that they are all right. Thank you so much - Janice Banta

  • To anyone trying to get information from friends/relatives in Cayman: Please note that, although cell lines and land lines are down, text messaging is functional, and you can communicate with loved ones in that way. I hope this helps - Frank Balderamos

  • Thank you for the post about the text messaging still working. Is it possible to text message from Cayman cellular provider websites? If so, can someone please post the site addresses so that people can text their loved ones? Thank you - Erin & Mark, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada

  • CORRECTION: With apologies, it appears that only people with Cayman-issued cell phones can text message with people in Cayman (i.e. those that were evacuated to the US and took their cell phones with them are able to text with people still in Cayman). I have not heard any information regarding any of the people mentioned on this page. However, please take solace in the fact that my contacts have heard from all over the island and there has been no mention of serious injuries. Unfortunately, according to what I have been told, the damage to property is extensive - Frank Balderamos

  • We are associated with the owners of the Sunshine Suites by Wyndham located across the street from the Westin on Seven Mile Beach. Our General Manager, Jerry was able to get all of the hotel guests safely evacuated to the local shelter and he and one other employee stayed on to ride out hurricane Ivan. Based on a telephone call with him at 9:00am CST, September 12th, the hotel was under approximately three feet of water and rising. Severe water damage, wind and torrential rains ripped portions of the roof off the hotel. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of the people that have suffered this devastating hurricane. • Thank you for the information as there is little to no coverage on the local channels in N Florida. I last spoke to my brother and brother in law, Noel Chris Webb and Phil Wilmot, who were in a building across from the Glass House with about 40 other families, at about 3 pm. The view from the 4th floor was "devastating," but their building appeared secure. We are still waiting to here from our father Noel Webb and sister Lisa Michelle Webb in Breakers, and from our sister Anna McLean and her family in Newlands. We last got hold of Michelle this AM at 6 and there was already window breakage and flooding in her home which is well above sea level. We have heard from our cousin Rodney Webb, who lives behind Elizabethan - his roof had detached and the last we heard they were hiding in a partially covered bedroom. We have also heard word from our cousin Debbie Webb-McField in Newlands, her roof also detached but she was safe at the time of communication. I have no idea where he is and can't get through the emergency line posted on this website. As for the text messaging mentioned earlier, I think, it would only be possible to text message to a GSM cell phone not digital, as the towers, I read, have been damaged. Was unable to get hold of my parents but my grandma did and they told her the roof was beginning to come off. Neither I nor my fiancé have had any communication since then but we are hoping the actual people of Cayman are all safe and alive. One of my best friends (Jen Grant McCarthy) and her husband (Kirk McCarthy) and 2 year old son (Noah) were unable to evacuate because she was admitted to the hospital on Thursday - 9+ months pregnant. If you know Jen & Kirk McCarthy, please post a note if you know anything. Also, if you have any news on Shawn Cain and his family, please post also. Thank you, sending love and prayers for everyone's safety - Dallyce Brisbin

  • Heard from people who stayed at First Baptist Church that several hundred people are there, some recently delivered by emergency personnel. All are in good shape. But the island is in bad shape. I got the phone call via cell phone at 1:00 am Eastern time on Monday morning - Rex Crane

  • Looking for news from anyone in Governors Harbour (Nelson Quay). Trying to find out status of friends that didn't make it off the island. Any information from that area would be greatly appreciated. Our prayers are with you all during this time of need - Wiles

  • Our daughter Laura, who had been sheltering in the police HQ in George Town, last phoned briefly at about midday Sunday, local time. Unable to contact her by phone or e-mail since then. Heard report on ITV this (Monday) morning from the captain of HMS Richmond that the police station in George Town had suffered damage. Have just spoken to the Cayman Government Office in the UK and they had only heard of damage to outbuildings. I believe that there is a police station as well as the police HQ.  Does anyone have more information? Thank you. Very best wishes to all out there and those with friends and family there - Rick and Anne, Devon, UK

  • Our friends Brad and Carol have lived in the Caymans for over 4 years. We are so worried about them. Thank you for keeping your website up-to-date as the Canadian media has almost no coverage. • My brother Ben Le Sueur and a friend Simon Dodkins were reportedly last seen on the roof of their homes waiting to be rescued. If anyone has any news of them, please post it! - Judy Le Sueur

  • My brother Rafe and his girlfriend Penny live on Palm Heights too. They had evacuated to friends yesterday and we were able to contact them as late as about 2:00 p.m. Cayman time Sunday. Apparently they had heard from neighbors that cars were "floating away" near the apartment they had left and that there was lots of flooding. We have not been able to get a connection out of the US since then, but have been tracking the storm online. They had hoped to get back to assess the damage to their apartment this afternoon, but we haven't heard anything since. They assured us that they and their friends were safe but that property damage and flooding would be severe for all. There are reports on the web of the Hyatt being evacuated and flooding is some of the 7 mile Beach hotels. There has been good information on the BBC web site (www.bbc.co.uk) They have a reporter in Havana who has been in contact with some on the Island - Maggie Scott, Los Angeles

  • We last heard from our daughter, Cori Snyder, at 11:30 am (Cayman time) via cell phone. She and several other folks were at the Ritz Carlton Residences (in a stairwell) at Seven Mile Beach, and they were really frightened and terrified at what scenes they were seeing and hearing regarding Ivan. As everyone that has friends or relatives on the islands, we are also very concerned about the situation. We would appreciate any new information about the safety of her and all of your loved ones. If we hear something new, we will post. It is now 1 am there as I post this. Let's hope and pray that all are well! - Douglas Snyder

I tried to call him again today (13th) but it appears that his cell phone is out. He has been working over there for about 11 years and has only been able to get back to Australia for a holiday once in that time. I would appreciate any news, if someone knows of his whereabouts, as our mother and I are extremely worried - Michelle Mewburn, Australia

  • My brother, Gary Keegan, runs the yacht charter company Supersail Cayman. He phoned us on Friday to say he was taking the yachts out to sea to sit out the hurricane. I was wondering if there was a slim chance anyone knows where he has gone or if anyone has heard from him. His yachts were moored near My Bar at the Sunset Hotel. My thoughts are with you all - Olly, Dundalk, Ireland

  • Last heard from my daughter at 4pm UK time, 10am Cayman time. She is at the hospital and on the 1st floor. 5ft of water on the ground floor. No contact since then. She said everyone was fine, roof still on - Anne Miligan, Scotland

  • My brother in law Kevin Stromsmoe was sheltering at the Hyatt on Friday night. I have heard unofficial reports that the Hyatt Regency was evacuated and in another report that the roof was possibly ripped off. Has anyone heard any news from others at the Hyatt? Have you heard anything of Kevin Stromsmoe? - Shila Berteig

  • I spoke with my family who are at a shelter in the Appleby Spurling and Hunter Building on Fort Street at approx 4pm (3pm Cayman). I have since then lost all contact with their cell phones. My father tells me that a building opposite them (I believe HSBC) had severe damage to one of the outer walls, to the point that you could see the inside staircase. I believe this was also a shelter as he saw people enter the building at the start of the storm, but he was unable to see if they were affected by the damages to the wall. The Appleby building had window damage, so the approx 50 people inside moved to the basement. However, due to flooding they then moved to the first floor. My father says that about 30 of them worked round the clock to prevent water coming through, and were successful in their attempts. They also reported extensive damage to cars in the area due to hail (yes, hail). My sister's car had all the windows smashed in. My family are from Governors Harbour, but were mandatory evacuated by the police, who were also reportedly trying to evacuate the Seven Mile Beach area right down to the last minute. My twin sister is a nurse at the hospital and is on call there. She reported to my father that cars were floating away due to the flooding. I have sent a text to my older sister and am waiting to see if it works. I spoke with my friends in West Bay up until 2am yesterday, but have had no word since. If anyone has any info on West Bay, it would be much appreciated. I am also relieved that the HMS Richmond is en route to help. Thanks for all the updates. Sincerely - Beth Henning

  • Spoke to friends at Treasure Island and Britannia yesterday. The Webbs, and Big Jim Shivers. Jim was okay at Treasure Island, said the windows were leaking, but he was okay. Friends at Britannia were worried about the roof, they were on the middle floor, the Hyatt canal has flooded everywhere, they said the water was 6 to 8 ft at some points downstairs, cars floating etc. Does anyone have any news on the Cayman Club on Seven Mile Beach, as we have a condo there? My brother Wayne Gooding who works at the Hyatt Hotel as a bell man - his cell is 526-1975. Also my cousin Mrs Juliette Gooding who is the manager of 911 communications. Last we heard from her she was based at one of the Cable and Wireless building along with the 911 staff. Please if you can get me any information about them and if they are all okay, please call me in New York. We are very worried and we have no way of knowing after we see what the hurricane did to the beautiful island of Grand Cayman. Thank you - Maiona Gooding

I can only pray and hope for the best, any information is greatly appreciated. By the way they are in the Prospect/Marina Dr area - Santos S Valladares, Hollywood ,Fl

  • We are thinking about you all and desperately hoping everyone is safe. My brother Stephen Broadbelt and his future wife Shannon Mclean and her family are in East End and we want to send them and those near them all our love. The last time we heard from them, they were in the shelter in Gun Bay, a family had just run into the shelter having just had their home destroyed. Stephen wanted us to give him the latest weather report as they thought the eye of the storm was heading for them but we couldn't get through to them again. We hope to hear what has happened as soon as the navy has any news on the East End of the island. We feel so helpless and just hope all the islanders are being strong and hanging in there until help arrives. The Cayman people are like one big family and we know they will be supporting and helping each other, especially those who are young, old or weak. Thank you for your website - we are glued to it until further news arrives - Sally

  • I just flew out of Cayman on Thursday and survived Ivan. I have noticed that not many of these responses about family have been answered. Paulo from Ragazzi and family are fine - they live on my street. Teachers from St. Ignatius that I spoke to and know are ok: Natalie Walls, Allison Taylor, Brendan Smith, Wendy George, Vivine Campbell, Pam Morris, Joanne Goetz, Ms. Devlon. Paul and Michele Key. Hope this helps. The airport is mayhem. Keep trying the cell phones. The best way to get out is a chartered flight. There was definitely more of a police presence the day we left. God bless everyone - Carlin Howe

  • Thank you for keeping the rest of the world up to date with what's happening to families and friends. I can see that the CI government made a statement re: people allowed back on Grand Cayman but I'm having difficulty finding any information from the CI Government as to who can leave the island. Would you be able to clarify that for me? I believe there is some conflicting information around particularly regarding Civil Servants. Many thanks - Victoria MacPherson

  • My father was evacuated from Grand Cayman back to the States last Wednesday. He was not feeling well with a "sour stomach". He is a diabetic. Friday morning he asked to be taken to the ER. By noon he was admitted to ICU with Acute Kidney Failure. Immediate dialysis saved his life, but they're still trying to determine the root cause. Right now they are testing for parasites that they think he may have gotten from contaminated food or water after the hurricane. If anyone else has these symptoms they need to be aware of how critical it can be, and how fast kidney failure can result - Julie Bechtel

  • I found that if I called Cayman from Canada - I had success by going through the operator. Otherwise - my calls were intercepted with messages like - # not in service and the likes. Go through your operator and you'll have success - Shirley Enslin
