National Hurricane Committee

Friday, September 17, 2004
The recovery programme is running full steam ahead following Hurricane Ivan.
Good progress is underway in the key areas of utilities, medical, security, food
and shelter for destitute persons, and a reconstruction programme for the
island's lost houses and other buildings.
CUC, The Water Authority, Cayman Water and Cable & Wireless have worked
diligently to restore essential services. Some areas now have limited power and
water supplies. Telecommunications services are being rapidly restored.
All Cable & Wireless towers are in good shape and only one exchange was
seriously damaged.
The District Health Centres have opened and are serving the needs of persons
in the medical shelters in the districts. The Royal Navy and the Baptist
Hospital are providing additional medical supplies.
The reconstruction programme is underway.
The Contractors Association, CASE (The Society of Contractors, Architects,
Surveyors and Engineers) and the Planning Department are working together to
develop strategies to fast track this important work.
Overseas expertise and local licensed electricians, plumbers, structural
engineers and CASE members will assist Planning Department Building Inspectors.
Security has been given a high priority with a thrust to maintain a high
visibility police presence in Recovery Programme Gains Momentum local
communities.
Police are taking a hard line on curfew violators, with vehicles being seized
as well as arrests.
Food and drinking water supplies have improved with the opening of some
supermarkets for business and others offering free groceries.
The Red Cross will be trucking in food and water to those in need in the
outlying districts.
