Relief work begins

On Tuesday, 80 British servicemen from the frigate HMS Richmond came ashore on Grand Cayman to assist Government in security and other operations. They will be supported in short order by the Royal Fleet Auxiliary vessel, HMS Wave Ruler.

HE the Governor Bruce Dinwiddy has indicated that four disaster relief representatives of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) were due to arrive in the Cayman Islands on Wednesday.

They were due to arrive with two disaster relief experts from the Department for International Development (DFID) of the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

Following meetings Mr Dinwiddy participated in on Tuesday the National Recovery Steering Committee (NRSC) has been formed to oversee the rebuilding process.
The NRSC will include: Cabinet Representatives, including the Leader of Government Business the Hon McKeeva Bush; the Leader of the Opposition the Hon Kurt Tibbetts; three representatives from the private sector; and National Hurricane Committee (NHC) and private sector relief coordinators.
Mr Dinwiddy said: “We are going to need a lot of international help.”
