In discussions with Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Planning,
Communications and Works on Friday, 11 September, Juliette Gooding, 911 Manager
for the Cayman Islands raised concerns that the 3rd floor of the Police Building
in George Town might not be strong enough to withstand the impending category 5
hurricane.
Kearney Gomez knew he would have to move his team to another building if this
hurricane was going to make a direct hit on the Cayman Islands and Mr Tim Adam,
Chief Executive of Cable & Wireless, had no hesitation stepping up to the plate
and offering One Technology Square as the new location for 911.
“We were overwhelmed by the welcome we received from Cable & Wireless and
immediately felt part of the family,” said Juliette Gooding. “When Sunday
morning dawned we were inundated with calls, we started off with 8 land lines
and we then added four cell phones.
“In a three-hour period we took over 850 calls. For many people it was enough
just to hear a voice at the end of the phone and to know that there was someone
else out there during that terrible time.”
“We can’t say a big enough thank you to Cable & Wireless.
“We feel as if we have been adopted and something good has come out of a
disaster, we have made many new friends.
Mr Gomez made the right decision to re-house our team as the police station
suffered severe damage during the storm,” added Juliette.
