The First Baptist Church, Crewe Road, George Town, has been helping the
community in recent times by providing cooked meals, free of charge to many
people in key services, as well as anyone who comes to the church and needs a
meal. The kitchen in the Gymnasium area of the church building is staffed by
volunteers from the church, including teachers from the First Baptist Church
School and Wee Care pre-school facilities.
Mike Flowers, who is helping to co-ordinate the operation, said: “All of our
teachers from the school are helping; we’ve got five cooks from three different
restaurants; we’ve had donations of food from all over the island, many places,
too many to mention.”
Mike continued: “We’re cooking it, preparing it, and delivering it, to
police, customs workers and other emergency workers, making sure all those
people get one hot meal a day, we’re also feeding some of the shelters, plus the
many people who walk in here every day.
The First Baptist Christian School is also hoping to be back up and running
as soon as possible, hopefully WEE care and the school will be open on 1
November if not before.
Water has been restored and electricity is expected within a week to ten
days. Presently, construction is ongoing in the WEE Care and educational wings.
Care is being taken to ensure that all damage is repaired to provide a safe and
secure educational environment for students once they return.
The school intends to follow Government requirements related to the number of
school days and is working on a new calendar for the year. The school is
continuing to register current students who are still on the Island as well as
taking new enrollments.
