Learning Centres open in absence of school

Wednesday, October 27, 2004

As plans continue for the reopening of all schools by 1 November, the Ministry of Education is in the meantime setting up Learning Centres. The aim is to deliver the core subjects of Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies, and some creative subjects such as Art, Music and Drama and Physical Education.

Two Learning Centres have been established in Cayman Brac for Grand Cayman students who will return when schools resume in November and there is also a small Learning Centre being organised by the United Church at the East End Public Library.

A Learning Centre for primary-aged students will open on 25 October at Elmslie United Church Hall. Priority will be given to students who attend George Town Primary School and their siblings who attend other government primary schools. All other students for the George Town district will be admitted on an individual basis as space allows.

A morning snack and lunch will be available and buses will collect and deliver students. Parents need to listen out for bulletins that will be aired on the radio detailing the arrangements for transport.

Other Learning Centres are planned to open at Savannah United Church if the need arises, at the Agape Family Worship Centre and the Stephen Jared Ebanks Youth Centre, the latter of which will provide accommodation to Year 10 John Gray High School students. It is not anticipated that a centre will be needed for George Hicks High School students at this time. Plans are to open this school by 1 November.

The Ministry of Education thanked the churches, which have assisted with this project as well as many others who are assisting with similar programmes.
