The Royal Cayman Islands Police will be better equipped to respond to reports from the community with the arrival of ten decommissioned cars from the Florida Sheriff’s Department.
Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Police Commissioner Buel Braggs said, “The arrival of the vehicles is timely, fourteen police patrol cars were lost during Hurricane Ivan, representing about fifteen percent of the total fleet, while several others were severely damaged.”
He further stated that the reduction in the amount of vehicles available had reduced the mobility of officers and they had been forced to equip themselves with some rental vehicles.
Speaking on how the vehicles will be distributed the Commissioner added, “I am in the process of preparing a policy as to how they should be properly used but I intend giving specific orders to police officers who would be able to use the vehicles in their daily patrol and even take them home which will be a new practice.”
There is also a possibility, Commissioner Braggs said, of the Police getting another ten vehicles from the Florida Sheriff’s Department in the not too distant future.
Meanwhile the Assistant Commissioner of Police Rudolph Dixon emphasized that the time has come when the police will be more vigilant in enforcing traffic laws especially when it comes to the failure of drivers to pay heed to the stop signs at junctions.
“People are blatantly violating the law, drivers are refusing to stop and instead are following those in front of them, disregarding the stop sign,” said the Assistant Commissioner.
