Questions from Our Readers

Friday, October 29, 2004

The following are some of the questions we are continuing to receive from our readers. We regret that we are unable to reply to each individually because Cayman Net News itself is still operating under reduced conditions and we just do not have the resources to deal with such a high volume of enquires. We are therefore passing on these questions to the appropriate government departments and/or private sector associations and we will publish any general or specific responses from them.

Readers should however bear in mind that both public and private sectors are extremely stretched at the moment and, even assuming the information requested is available in the first place, a response may not be forthcoming quickly or at all. Readers can also correspond directly with Government Information Services (GIS) by e-mail to the Chief Information Officer as follows: patricia.ebanks@gov.ky

  • I have a house on this beautiful island and I hope to come there later this month to survey the damage and start re-building. I am told that I cannot stay longer than three weeks. Is this true? Also my brother is coming with me for support and to help. We want to make arrangements to fly this week but are very concerned about our entry onto the Island and as to whether there is truth to the above-mentioned conditions or not. Thank you in advance. Your coverage has been terrific and appreciated by us in Canada - Arne Jensen

  • I own a house on the beach in Pease Bay. What will be done with all the sand pushed from the beach to the road? My neighbor via photos has lost a depth of 6 foot of sand; according to other pictures there are giant mounds of sand sitting on the road or next to houses a block away - will the government put the sand back and repair the beach? Or leave it the way it is? It is not a tourist area but still is the beach and will make a giant difference on decisions to rebuild in Cayman or not to rebuild - R J Grindinger

  • Can you please tell me what is happening with people renting apartments? I have heard horror stories about landlords raising the rent on their existing tenants. Is this legal? If not, to whom do we report these acts? Thank you and keep up the good work! - Erin

  • I was very glad to find the web site for Cayman Net News. In the USA, we have had almost no coverage of the damage done in Grand Cayman. From the little news that I was able to get, it sounded like Ivan did some major damage. We pray for your recovery efforts. We have visited the island several times over the past years and totally enjoy the weather and, most of all, the friendly people. We have stayed at the Hyatt, and the Regal Beach Club which were both great. Last January during our vacation at the island, we won a 1-week stay at the Grand Caymanian Resort and we had reserved the weeks of January 8 - 22, 2005. I have not been able to contact them and I wonder how they are doing. Do you know if the Grand Caymanian Resort would be open in January? Thank you for your help - Ray Hardin

  • It’s somewhat hard to tell from just a few updates I can find on the website as to how Cayman is faring. Is the island open yet for tourists; is the beach erosion severe on Seven Mile; how is the downtown area? It seemed so awful, but I can’t find details for Cayman like I can for Grenada and Haiti. I hope everyone is doing as well as can be expected - Laura Greenwood

  • A lot of people are asking what relief supplies and donated materials they can bring to Grand Cayman when the cruise lines start back next week. I know by experience with Roatan that many people who cruise are glad to donate. Where can one drop stuff and what is specifically needed most? - Joe Kralich

  • I am a student in Cayman and I am to be married January 1, 2005. Fortunately the church and the reception site are fine, but unfortunately the hotel was destroyed. I was curious if any one out there would like to rent their home (Dec. 29 - Jan. 2). Please email me if any one can help or if any one has any suggestions. I love Cayman, cannot wait to return (my fiancé is there helping rebuild and I miss him and the island). I could use any help possible - Jaclyn Repay

  • Is there somewhere on your website, or on a link, that we can find out progress in electricity being available on the island? We own a condo in Plantana, want to come down and participate in restoration, but of course, would only add to the islands burden before electricity is restored. How can we find out news in this area? - Anne, Denver, Colorado

  • Where can I find information about damage to local hotels? My husband and I are planning a vacation this spring... how do we know the condition of the islands? I really appreciate your help - Jessica Weisel

  • We are vacationing in Cayman in January. We are concerned about the aftermath of the hurricane. We stay in Plantana. Are the islands and the restaurants ready for tourists? We hear so many conflicting stories. Thanks - Elaine Buscemi
