Pirates Week to go ahead in Little Cayman

Pirates Week may have been cancelled, but a group of
divers visiting Little Cayman last weekend decided to
resurrect the party. In keeping up the tradition the
pirates ‘raided’ a number of bars, restaurants and
hotels last Saturday night, 30 October. The group of
twenty guests from Cape Cod, Massachusetts, staying
at the Pirates Point Resort, were some of the first
tourists to visit the Island since Hurricane Ivan passed

Although the usual celebrations that mark Pirates Week around the Cayman Islands were cancelled as a result of the hurricane, residents are not letting it spoil their fun in Little Cayman as they plan to carry on regardless of Ivan with celebrations over the public holiday weekend, 12 - 15 November.

The theme for the celebrations is “Ol’ Thyme Cayman”. Highlights of the weekend will include a street parade from Head of Bay to the McCoy’s Lodge on Saturday afternoon and dances on both Friday and Saturday nights, also at the McCoy’s Lodge. Caymanian band Island Vibes will be performing both nights at the dances, and Saturday night will also feature a firework display at 8:00 pm and a raffle for Little Cayman Primary School.

Prizes will be awarded for the best adult and children’s costumes. There will also be a dominos tournament and children’s story writing contest. The theme for stories is ‘Why I love Cayman.’

Arts and crafts and Little Cayman cooking will be featured at the celebrations, including the traditional McCoy’s Barbecue.

The celebrations are open for all to attend and visitors from Grand Cayman and Cayman Brac are welcome to take part. Organiser Maxine Moore said, “Any Caymanians and residents in Grand Cayman that haven’t lost their spirit and want to take part in Pirates Week celebrations are welcome to come and join us.

If your costume survived Ivan, bring it along and join our parade.”

There are a number of accommodation options for revelers from Grand Cayman and Cayman Brac and organisers hope there may be additional flights available if necessary.
