The George Town branch of the ruling United Democratic Party (UDP) has a new chairman in the person of Mr Donny Smith following the resignation of Mr Edlin Myles.
Mr Myles, who served as chairman for the past seven months resigned his position effective 31 October, stating that he had advised the executive committee of his decision.
He said that as an insurance consultant, Hurricane Ivan had forced him to focus even more on the demands of his clients and business.
“Relieving myself of the role of chairman at this time gives me greater flexibility to deal with the insurance situation and the needs of my clients on a one-to-one basis, helping them and my fellow Caymanians to have their claims addressed and getting people back to their homes,” he said.
During an interview with Cayman Net News, Mr Myles revealed that his job as chairman was very fulfilling and he achieved several things, among them helping to put in place plans for the forthcoming elections.
“I remain a member of the Executive of the George Town Committee and a member of the UDP and will continue to serve the party in any way I can,” he added.
He also expressed his willingness to work with the new chairman designate, Mr Donny Smith. When asked whether there were any influencing political factors in making the decision to resign as branch chairman of the UDP Mr Myles said there were none.
Chairman of the UDP Billy Reid told Cayman Net News he was saddened by the resignation of Mr Myles.
“He was a good chairman, he did a good job and he will be missed but the new chairman is also good and he served as chairman before, so I am confident things will be okay.”
Mr Myles has been a UDP member since the party’s inception three years ago. A Notary Public, he is also a serving member of the Immigration Board, the Labour Appeals Tribunal and a Commissioner of the Cayman Islands Boxing Council.
Meanwhile the new UDP branch Chairman Donny Smith who was appointed during a meeting held on Thursday 4 November told Cayman Net News, his main focus is the welfare of the people in the district and assisting them to cope with the aftermath of Hurricane Ivan.
Part of Mr Smith’s job is to prepare the party for general elections. “I will be assisting in getting the UDP’s candidates ready so that we can win the upcoming general elections,” he said.
The new George Town District Chairman held the job previously but resigned citing pressure from work and a medical condition at the time.
Mr Smith stated that he is now ready to and capable of meeting the obligations required of his party now since, “the situations that existed before with my health and the heavy workload have changed considerably.”
