MAYA 1 cable repairs go as planned

Friday,  November 19, 2004

The planned shut down of the MAYA 1 cable system for maintenance of the Power Feed Equipment in Florida, as well as other maintenance activities in Costa Rica and here in Cayman, was according to Cable & Wireless, a success and the repairs are completed.

The system shut down just before one in the early hours of Sunday, 14 November and was back to normal later the same day just after lunch at around one o’clock with all traffic via MAYA 1 restored and functioning as usual.

During the maintenance period, customers experienced a reduction in capacity for all Internet and Voice services. At this point all traffic via the MAYA 1 Cable was lost including traffic for the Cayman Islands, although there was a limited amount of capacity on the Cayman-Jamaica Fibre System.

The timing of this service interruption was carefully selected as the Cayman terminal station has no restoration options because of the work being done at the Florida and Costa Rica stations.

This particular time is the lowest traffic period of the week and was therefore the most appropriate time to plan an outage of this type.
