With Esso’s Tiger and CUC’s Sparky all ready to cheer along on the sidelines, the Cayman Islands Sports Day, otherwise known as Sports Alive! looks set to be a knockout event.

Sports Associations and Clubs and health and fitness organisations across Cayman will be represented at this first-of-a-kind event, to be held at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex in George Town from 10am until 6pm on Saturday 4 December.

The Cayman Islands Athletics Association, Purple Dragon Martial Arts, CI Basketball Association, CI Cricket Association, CI Triathalon Association and the CI Cancer Society will all have booths, taking an active part in the day’s events, among many others.

Event coordinator Kim Rough-Moses says: “After Hurricane Ivan just about all sporting events, both home and away had to be cancelled. There has been nothing fun to do and nothing sports-related to look forward to, so we set about changing all that.”

Mrs Rough-Moses says that the response by potential booth holders has been highly positive and Government has been extremely forthcoming, donating the use of the sports complex for the day, paying for banners and providing input and support from Meita Day, Sports Coordinator for Women and Colin Anglin, Sports Coordinator for Men.

Although the schedule of events is constantly being added to, a brief run down so far includes the opening of the VIP lounge at 11am and an 11.30am official opening ceremony with Hon George McCarthy, who will be the acting Governor in the Hon Governor H.E. Dinwiddy’s absence that day. The Leader of Government Business, Hon McKeeva Bush will give the Welcome Address.

Events begin at 10am with ladies football and the CI Cricket Association’s bowl and bat event. The Lions Pool will be open to the public between 10am and 12 midday. Purple Dragon Martial Arts will be giving demonstrations throughout the day and the adults duathalon begins at 12 midday, with the children’s duathalon at 1pm.

At 2.30pm there will be a Scouts drill display and there will be slam dunk and 5-on-5 competitions in volleyball, basketball and netball. The main sporting event of the day will be a football match at 4.30pm until 6pm for seniors of the game (only three players under 35, so let’s hope they last the course.)

Children will be well catered for, with special hopscotch and marbles competitions in a supervised kids corner. Food will be provided by Thai Orchid and soft drinks dispensed by the Leos Club (the only items which need to be paid for). A picnic area will be set out so visitors can also bring their own and make a day of it.

However, coordinators are keen to stress that the event is not just about one day of sports fun. Mrs Rough-Moses says: “The event gives people the opportunity to get involved in sports, in whatever capacity, as an ongoing recreation. For example, the CI Scouts Association will be holding its annual registration day (originally scheduled for September) on that day.”
