Chamber Calls for Legislative Reform

Chief Executive Officer of the
Cayman Islands Chamber of
Commerce Wil Pineau

Wednesday,  December 15, 2004

The Cayman Islands Chamber of Commerce (CICC) believes that legislative reform is necessary to address issues faced by both landlord and tenants.

Chief Executive Officer of the CICC, Wil Pineau said his organisation is putting a task force together to look at the issue, as there are problems on both sides.

“We have received more than 74 complaints. There are landlords who are indiscriminately increasing their rents, while there are tenants who are refusing to pay rents, despite major investment made in repairs by some landlords.”

After Hurricane Ivan many houses have been destroyed or damaged and limited housing is available so a number of landlords have increased rents in some cases by as much as 300 percent.

Mr Pineau believes that there should be a more amicable relationship between landlords and tenants at the moment and both parties need to take their responsibilities seriously. Mr Pineau added that he believes some policies and procedures regarding strategies for maintaining law and order, protecting the environment, cargo capacity as well as managing land fill and dealing with hazardous materials, must be reviewed and amended.

“Hurricane disaster has taught us all that more can be accomplished by working together than acting independently,” he said, and expressed satisfaction with the contribution made by commercial businesses and residents to get things back to normal after the passage of Hurricane Ivan.
