A three-day art workshop recently took place at Eagle House Youth Rehabilitation Centre at Northward.

Art instructor Simon Benjamin facilitated the workshop. During the workshop, the students learnt screen-printing, and how the process could be used to make T-shirts and posters.

“I would like to go back and do another workshop soon,” Mr Benjamin said. “We presented the idea to them so they could have a business running either through Eagle House, or start their own business later on when they leave.”

“During the workshop, many of the students spoke seriously about starting their own business,” Mr Benjamin added.

“I was surprised at the skill level of people who had never done this work before; it was really excellent. I believe that the potential is unlimited as long as people are given a chance, and the funding is available to carry on.”

Mr Benjamin said that interest amongst the students increased after the first day, when the other students saw what the first students had produced.

“We had seven the first day, and the second day we had two or three more.”

Praising the student’s attitude, Mr Benjamin said, “They were all very enthusiastic and very well behaved; they all helped each other out.”

At the end of the workshop, the students had all produced T-shirts, each one decorated with their own design.

Student Gary Richards said, “It was a huge success, and we learnt things that we never thought of before; it gave us the knowledge to make new things.”

Kemar Siburn said, “I really enjoyed it; it helped me to reveal new talents that I didn’t know I had.”
