Artists wanted for ‘Art @ Governors’

Young visitors at art@governors 2003, put their
creativity to work

Friday,  January 14, 2005

On Saturday 29 January, members of the public will once again be invited into the garden of Government House for this year’s ‘Art @ Governor’s.

The annual event, attended by H.E The Governor, Bruce Dinwiddy, and his wife, Emma Dinwiddy, showcases the work of over a hundred traditional and contemporary local artists.

Every year the scope of the event grows, with more visitors and more artists displaying their work, so it comes as no surprise to find that the 2005 Art @ Governors is expected to be bigger and better than ever.

Unlike other art exhibitions, ‘Art @ Governors gives guests the opportunity of not just looking at art, but actually meeting the artists, and watching them demonstrate their technique.

Visitors are also able to participate in various ongoing art projects, and this year they are invited to join with others in a special ‘healing’ work of art, which will be underway in the garden.

Because of the event’s sense of accessibility, those who may not normally regard themselves as ‘artists’ are encouraged to display their work. This means that the visual experience for the visitor is far richer and more varied than exhibitions based solely on the work of established artists. It also increases the sense of accessibility into the world of art for the visitor, who, hopefully leaves with the impression that they could ‘have a go’ at art themselves, and several local artists have reported that they first thought of taking up art after visiting Art @ Governors.

The range of different kinds of art on display is extremely wide, from traditional media such as painting on canvas and sculpture, to displays of craft items such as patterned quilts, pottery, and mosaics.

Children are not left out of the event, and many of the attractions have been designed especially for them. This year, one such event will be, “My Best Blue Dragon,” with First, Second and Third prizes on offer for the best rendering of a blue iguana. The children taking part in this competition will be divided into four age categories, Pre-School (0-3) Kindergarten (4-5), Younger Primary (6-8) and Older Primary (9-11).

Children are also encouraged to take part in Art @ Governor’s by bringing their own artwork, which will be hung throughout the garden on special clotheslines.

In addition to art stalls, there will be representatives from many non-profit organisations at the event, so that visitors to the exhibition can get a good idea of all the voluntary work that goes on in Cayman, see if they would like to join in and help, or offer financial support.

The exhibition does not just cover visual arts, and this year the young people’s musical group, Broadway’s Class Act, will be entertaining everybody with their singing and dancing.

A ‘Surprise DJ’ is also billed to perform, so that this year’s event truly promises to have something for everyone. ‘Art @ Governors will be open to the public from 1pm to 4pm, and admission is free.
