Spotts dumpsite in the spotlight

Police Commissioner Buel Braggs and Orrett Connor
 meet disgruntled residents in Spotts

Friday,  January 14, 2005

There are conflicting reports as to what will be the fate of the controversial dumpsite located at Spotts, Newlands.

Residents say Government has indicated its willingness to relocate the dumpsite used for the processing of garbage.

However, Head of the Cayman Islands Recovery Operations (CIRO) Orrett Connor said he cannot comment on the matter at least for the moment and was not prepared to confirm or deny the statement made by Spotts residents about the relocation of the dumpsite.

After complaining for several weeks about the fires there and the possible health hazard as a result of an increase in roaches and rodents, residents blocked the entrance to the site preventing trucks from entering last Friday morning (7 January).

Mr Connor accompanied by the Commissioner of Police Buel Braggs went to the site and tried to broker a deal with the residents to calm the situation.

Since then, an attorney representing the residents has written to both MC Restoration, the US company awarded the debris removal contract and the Attorney General, informing them that legal action will follow if the dumpsite is not closed and cleaned. A Tuesday 11 January deadline was given to both parties.

One of the residents said that government officials had since contacted an attorney looking after the affairs of the residents indicating that CIRO is looking to relocate the dumpsite to East End and will be cleaning the area at Spotts where garbage had been processed.
