Caymanian appointed NCCA Coach in Texas

Former Cayman Islands National Team player in the 1980's and 90's Philip Hydes has become the first Caymanian to be appointed as a soccer coach at a NCAA Division 1 University. Mr Hydes has taken up the job at the Methodist University in Dallas Texas. 

Having played with the Under 19, under 23 and senior men’s team and competed in many regional soccer competitions including Shell Cup, Cayman Cup, Caribbean Cup and Concacaf tournaments, Mr Hydes said he started to play for the Senior Men’s team at the age of 15 with Cayman National Bank. 

Mr Hydes said, “Under Coach Renard Moxam’s guidance I became a versatile player both in defence and midfield and captained Cayman National Bank youth team to League and cup finals then moved to Scholars International in 1991 where I enjoyed success in both the local and regional competitions.”

He was part of the 1994 Scholars Team that won the local league competition and competed in the Caribbean Champions of Champions tournament against Black Lions of Jamaica and Defence force of Trinidad. 

As a member of Scholars international Mr Hydes played against teams from the USA , Jamaica, Trinidad, Honduras, and enjoyed success in both domestic league and International Play. He then became Assistant Head Coach for Scholars International in 1994-1996. 

From 2004 to present Mr Hydes then became Assistant Men’s Coach at the Southern Methodist University, Dallas Texas.

Speaking on the appointment Mr Hydes said, “I am pleased to be advanced to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Tournament and I am also satisfied with my performance, finishing the regular season ranking third in the nation.”

On the personal side Mr Hydes has 2 children, Ashley and Tiffani living in Louisiana and is married to Gina. He is presently living in Dallas, Texas.
