One of Cayman Islands’ oldest sporting events will go ahead this month
Wednesday, January 26, 2005
This year’s Hash House Harriers annual Cross Island Relay will take place on 30 January.
Due to time constraints and the unsuitability of certain roads to sustain a high volume of traffic, especially in East End, the 31st annual relay will this year feature only 6 teams, but those teams will still compete in the traditional way with 6 legs, each 4 miles long.
The race will start in Gun Bay and the legs will terminate at the Blow Holes, the Frank Sound Junction, the Old Drive In Cinema at the edge of Bodden Town, Savannah Acres, ‘By the Sea’ Condominiums on South Sound and the Truman Bodden Sports
Centre.
A spokesman for the Hash House Harriers who have organized this popular event for many years said, “We wanted to hold the race to uphold the tradition - it is after all one of the oldest team sports events in the Cayman Islands. However, we do not know how many potential teams are out there as we know a lot of athletes have left.
“Additionally a large number of cars and supporters follow the race and the East End roads will not allow for this at the present time. We hope to be back to normal in 2006 when we may accommodate up to 30 teams.”
The Harriers have identified 6 teams to take part in the race but there may be room for a few individuals to join these teams. If you are interested, please contact Philip Sutcliffe on 547-1411 or John Elliott on 925-3207.
