Primary School students will return to the football field for the first time since Hurricane Ivan when the Annual Football Rally takes place on Saturday January 29 at the Annex, George Town.

Kick off is scheduled for 9.00am and thirteen schools are expected to participate in the event which is expected to last most of the day. In contrast to previous years the rally will mark the beginning and not the end of the primary school football season.

Schools would normally have been competing for most of the first term starting in early October but the Education Department’s Sports calendar had to be readjusted in the aftermath of Ivan. The league matches will now start the following weekend and will continue until the end of the current school term.

Peripatetic Physical Education Teacher with the Department of Education Ronnie Roach is excited to see the youngsters take to the field again.

“It shows the importance of sport in the total development of children. It is one of the ways that can help them cope with the stress in life,” Roach said.

“As educators we may need to focus more on what we consider the secondary aspects of the curriculum. The children are keen to play and I am looking forward to it as well. It is an integral part of the education system,” Roach stressed.

George Town Primary will be seeking to defend the title they won last year when they also finished second in the league behind league champions John A Cumber. George Town Coach Amanda McLean is cautiously optimistic of her team’s chances.

“It is difficult to make predictions because we have a number of new players who will now have to fit into various roles in the team,” McLean told Net News.

“This is the first time I will be coaching the A team. It was a learning experience last year when I was in charge of the B team that placed third and my colleague Philip Hackett coached the A team,” she said.
The thirteen teams will be divided into four groups with two advancing to the quarter finals.
