Former national player to be honoured

Lee Ramoon, former national football player and captain, is to be honoured at a dinner hosted by the Ministry of Community Services, Youth, Sports and Gender Affairs and the Cayman Islands Football Association (CIFA) on Saturday January 29th at Pedro St. James. 

Lee, who has dedicated more than half his life between 1979 and 2004 as a representative of Cayman football, was recently selected as Cayman’s recipient of the prestigious FIFA Centennial Order of Merit. The award was presented as a part of FIFA’s 100-year anniversary celebration, which saw outstanding footballers and administrators around the world being honoured for their dedication and contribution to the development of the game.

Dignitaries representing the Cayman Islands Government and FIFA have been scheduled to share in this honoured moment with Lee. Leader of Government Business Hon. McKeeva Bush, Minister of Youth & Sports Dr the Hon Frank McField, along with United Nations Ambassador for Sports & former FIFA World Player of the Year (1995) George Weah, FIFA Senior Vice President and CONCACAF President Jack A Warner, and CONCACAF General Secretary and FIFA Executive Committee Member Chuck Blazer, are among the individuals expected to be in attendance.

“This is the highest international honour FIFA has ever offered and I believe there is no one more deserving than Lee Ramoon,” said CIFA President Jeffrey Webb. “He has been a true sportsman and a tremendous player for the Cayman Islands. 

“He will go down in history as one of Cayman’s greatest players of all time and an unparalleled ambassador,” Mr Webb also added.

“I am delighted that Ambassador Weah, FIFA delegates Jack Warner and Chuck Blazer and other dignitaries have accepted my invitation to be here for this historic occasion.”

The event, which, is by invitation only, is said to be a welcomed opener to the Foster’s National League, which will run from February – April 2005.
