Red Bay Primary and Triple C sent early warnings with victories in the opening round of the annual primary school football competition last Saturday.
Red Bay overcame a spirited performance from a much improved East End Team to win 2-0 at the Annex while Triple C scored in the final 10 minutes of play to beat Bodden Town 1-0 at the Academy Field in George Town.
Jorel Bellafonte scored in the seventh minute of the second half and Marlon Mothersill added another in the 20th minute to secure full points for Red Bay. Red Bay also impressed in the rally played the previous week and seems to be one of the stronger teams in this year’s tournament. East End remained competitive throughout and could cause a few problems during the course of the season.
After a goalless first half it appeared that Bodden Town and Triple C would share the points with neither team finding the back of the net half way through the second half. Martin Webb then capitalised on a pass from JD Newman 20 minutes into the second half.
Bodden Town won the B league contest against Triple C 2-0 through second half strikes from Brian Wilson.
In another B league fixture John A Cumber (West Bay) beat Prospect
Primary 1-0. West Bay looked solid in mid-field with excellent passing and good ball skills but the combination of weak finishing and excellent goalkeeping by Patrick Williams denied them more goals.
It was the first match in the league for Prospect, a new school that opened last September. After an uncertain first half in which they created few scoring opportunities Prospect looked more threatening in the second half and need not be discouraged by the result.
“I am proud of these boys,” Principal Michael Walker said after the match.
“It’s a new team and we have only been practising a few weeks. I expect they will get better as the tournament progresses,” Walker said.
