Residents return to Rum Point Beach

A family wades in the shallow water at Rum Point

It has been five months since Hurricane Ivan hit the Cayman Islands and increasingly day-by-day life returns to normal. After taking a hard knock at the hand of Ivan one of the Island’s favourite locations is also slowly returning to its former glory.
Once again Rum Point is attracting both tourists and locals to its little piece of heaven on the northern point of the Island.
The beautiful beach with its calm and warm waters offer a great place for children and children-at-heart to wade and splash to their heart’s contents. There is never a dull moment with sand castles making, kayaking where the only worry is about changing direction without running into snorkelers or getting out of the boat.
At weekends wave-runners weave through boaters as adults once again walk along the beach, soak up the sun or take refuge under the trees in a hammock.
Rum Point is still one of the few beaches where sun-loungers are free and not reserved for ‘hotel guests only,’ an all too familiar instruction on many of Grand Cayman’s other beaches.
The beachside bar and restaurant has very easy-going, but polite and efficient staff ready to serve up the catch of the day and a mudslide to wash it down.
The regular ferry service from the Hyatt to Rum Point has yet to resume and where there’s a will there’s a way, but it doesn’t seem to make any difference on the weekend in particular as residents young and old are finding their way to Rum Point once again.
