In the aftermath of Hurricane Ivan, there have been no sure things and the events that have proceeded it have largely been as a result of dedication from organisers and support from the Community.
The Cayman Islands Sailing Club (CISC) is currently rebuilding following the devastation caused by Ivan and is pleased to be able to announce details of the first post-Ivan sailing event – the 2005 Easter Regatta which will be held on Saturday 26 March. Last year the Club celebrated the 40th Anniversary of this event which is a highlight of the annual sailing calendar.
This year will be a scaled down version of the regatta normally featuring a number of races and social events over the Easter weekend, due to the destruction and damage to the usual participating boats and the many other priorities that have arisen over the past six months.
There will be a single pursuit race from the Sailing Club (Red Bay, North Sound) to Seven Mile Beach which is sure to be an exciting event for all those involved – sailors and spectators alike - and is expected to be well supported as skippers confirm that they are still afloat and ready for the 2005 Easter Regatta. The race will be followed by a BBQ at Public Beach for all participants and members of
CISC.
The race will be a shortened version of the usual Round the Island Race and will take the participants from North Sound, around North West Point to Seven Mile Beach – a distance of approximately 16 miles.
Start times will be set from 10 am onwards (based on a handicap system) with most competitors expected round to the Seven Mile Beach area by early afternoon for an approximate finish time of 3pm. As usual the race is open to both CISC members and non-members and all sailboat owners are encouraged to participate and support this event to put Cayman Islands sailing back on track in 2005.
Registration and Skippers’ Briefing will be held at Durty Reids, Red Bay Plaza at 6pm on Thursday 24 March. Sailing instructions will also be available at this time. Potential racers can get more information by calling Race Officer Peta Adams on 927 0294. Skippers are requested to notify Peta or a member of the Race Committee of their intention to race prior to the Skippers’ Briefing.
Whilst Club records are gradually being retrieved, all past, current and potential members are encouraged to contact the Club on 947 7913 or
sailing@candw.ky to confirm their membership details for 2005.
In addition, CISC has put together a provisional scaled down racing and social calendar for the year as follows:
Commodore’s Cocktail Party – Saturday 7 May (clubhouse reopening)
J22 Regatta – Sunday 8 May to celebrate clubhouse reopening.
Midsummer Ball –Saturday 25 June at the Clubhouse
IVAN party – Saturday 10 September
J/22 Nationals – weekend of 10/11 September
