The Christian Radio Station, Heaven 97 has recently received a new license to broadcast a second station which will be called Gospel
88.7
The new radio station will feature more traditional music - Southern gospel, for example such as the Blackwoods and the Gaithers, and Black Gospel music, such as that performed by groups like the Brooklyn Tabernacle and the New Jersey Mass Choir.
One of the directors on the board of Heaven 97, Steve Faucette, explained that he had received several requests for more traditional gospel songs, and a more traditional format, but as he didn’t want to change Heaven 97, a new station was the best solution.
“Part of the struggle has been that older people have expected a Christian station to be more traditional; we’ve had a lot of interest in the more traditional music, and we didn’t want to ignore it. This one’s for you Mama,” said Mr
Faucette.
The new station will also feature more preaching, much of which will be imported from North America, such as the Philadelphia-based Dr Tony Evans. There will however be lots of local preaching and possible live sessions on Sundays.
The new station will be aimed at family listening, and besides religious programming there will also be a mix of local features and sports events, especially those involving children.
Mr Faucette said he anticipated that the new station would begin broadcasting sometime this summer.
