Ministers call on electorate to use their vote this May

 Friday, April 8, 2005

While politics and religion are often said not to be the best topics of conversation for polite after-dinner chatter, the Cayman Ministers’ Association, CMA is drawing the two topics together by calling on all eligible voters to exercise their democratic right to vote in the upcoming General Election.

The group of ministers has also called upon those participating in the Election to conduct themselves in a professional and courteous manner.

“We call all candidates and their supporters to demonstrate the qualities of leadership expected of those who aspire to the noble and honourable position of being elected members of Government for the next four years,” said the Ministers in a statement released on Wednesday 6 April.

As in previous years the clergy will be participating in the electoral process by offering prayers at meetings but the church representatives were keen to stress that while they were there to offer a spiritual contribution their presence should not be interpreted as support or endorsement for any political group, party, alliance or independent candidate.

“While we have agreed to offer prayers we have also made the decision not to remain on any platform,” said a CMA spokes person.

CMA has also confirmed that it has formed a code of political ethics for its members to adhere to during the campaign, which includes praying for all representatives and officials; to be fair and impartial; to be articulate on issues not personalities; and to be faithful to the highest standards of integrity.
