
Cayman law firm’s key man becomes QC

A well-known and respected member of the legal community in the Cayman Islands, Nigel Clifford of Appleby Spurling Hunter, has been appointed Queen’s Counsel in the Cayman Islands. In each of the Overseas Territories, the rank of Queens’ Counsel is awarded to those who have reached the highest standard of professional reputation and integrity.
Nigel Clifford, was formally admitted to the inner bar by H.E the Governor, Bruce Dinwiddy on behalf of the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, on Friday 1 April at a ceremony held at the Grand Court.
Many of Mr Clifford’s colleagues, fellow legal professionals, friends and family attended the ceremony to witness and celebrate this prestigious
honour.
Mr Clifford joined Appleby Spurling Hunter, and was admitted as an Attorney-at-Law in the Cayman Islands in 1987, having been in practice for 14 years as a barrister in London.
He has wide experience in civil and commercial litigation, including international arbitration work. He became a Partner of Appleby Spurling Hunter in 1991, and head of the Litigation Department in 1994.
Mr Clifford now performs the role of Senior Counsel and has particular expertise in complex cross-border insolvency litigation, having led the Cayman Islands team involved in the liquidation of BCCI, the world’s largest-ever financial institution insolvency.
He is a Council Member and past President of the Cayman Islands Law Society, a member of INSOL and COMBAR and is highly commended in numerous legal and business publications.
On the news of his appointment Mr Clifford has said: “I am delighted to have been appointed to this prestigious position and look forward to serving the Cayman Islands and the legal profession in this capacity”.
