LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Not such a bad idea to have the prison on the Brac

Wednesday, April 13, 2005

Dear Sir:

A lot of people believe on Grand Cayman that it could be a solution to a sore problem here to have the prison on Grand Cayman transferred to the Brac.

Let’s face it Grand Cayman is the hub of the financial service industry for the Islands and its economy is based on that hub. Without that then there is only the tourist industry and that would not be sufficient to make the Islands what they still are today from a global point of view.

The true facts are that the Brac could never be as economically viable as Grand Cayman, or for that matter Little Cayman. They will always be the way they are and it does seem to be the best option in many years to come. The other problem is when the prison riots began some time ago on Grand Cayman this could of been very damaging to Grand Cayman and its economy. Far better to have such an incident on the Brac because of the low profile of the island and keep Grand Cayman as economically and financially viable as possible.

This benefits everyone because it affects everyone who lives on the Islands. Not such a bad idea when you consider the long term point of view and anticipate the bigger picture far down the road. Better stop to think ahead and have the foresight than believe things can’t go wrong and make some of the adjustments now or sooner rather than later.

Ideally, because of the influx of crime that has come from other Islands in the Caribbean that has affected Grand Cayman directly, it would be better to consider at least a 1,000 capacity prison on the Brac. This is forward planning and preparing for the times ahead as again Northward is only a small prison with small capacity and overcrowding causes tensions in prisons and Northward will in the future no longer be able to cope.

Better to build now on the Brac to save money. It’s called cost effective forward planning. I hope this goes some way to explain some of the long term views expressed here on Grand Cayman.
