Deeply disappointed in the Cayman government
Friday, April 15, 2005
Dear Sir,
With reference to the situation that I see regarding the Cuban people trying to escape from what has to be the most repressive government in the western hemisphere, I as a Caymanian am deeply disappointed in the government of Cayman.
To have come up with such an agreement with Cuba that human lives do not mean anything as long as the government of our islands pleases the Cuban government for whatever reason, it is not clear to me.
The government officials that made and implemented such an agreement should ask the older Caymanians that know when Caymanians were very happy to go to Cuba to find work as well as medical attention as there were very little for them to do in Cayman.
I know that its not possible for the Cayman islands to handle a large amount of refugees at any one time, but to refuse to help a desperate group of people who are looking for one thing and that is to try and better themselves I think is most ridiculous and should be changed, as it seems that we have an open policy for everyone else that comes from the rest of the Caribbean, Central America and all other parts of the world who come here, and within a very short period of time have as many of their family here as possible and never leave.
There is one thing for sure and that it is not the Cuban refugees that are committing the crime and murders that are presently on the increase and seem to be growing.
For the upcoming election I would ask those that are elected or re-elected to take a stand for the betterment of these islands and make the necessary changes in the laws that will not allow such policies that are now in effect to continue, including the insurance companies, banks etc that continue to financially rape the residents of these islands, which has been happening for the past many years.
If the newly elected officials cannot accomplish this, then there should be another election to put the people in power that would accomplish the necessary changes for the betterment of the people of these islands.
