Local project managers within the government and private sector had the opportunity to hear international experts at the Project Management on Tour Seminar at the Westin Casuarina Resort and Spa last week.

“Professional Project Management is of special concern to the Islands in these days of post-Ivan recovery,” said Patrick Cimolini, Project Manager. “It is also critical to the ongoing future economic success.”

After the formal presentations there was a lively and positive discussion between the speakers and attendees that revolved around applying Professional Project Management methods to Cayman projects.

Project Management on Tour was formed by an international group of project managers to promote the profession of Project Management in smaller jurisdictions like the Cayman Islands where access to larger, formal venues is limited.

Keynote speaker Dr Lynn Crawford addressed project governance, personal and organizational and global performance standards.

Roy Sargent covered disaster response and recovery with Lesley Rider speaking on risk optimization.

Other topics included professional development and investment in the profession, stakeholder engagement and management.

“This diverse experience allowed speakers to illustrate the principles of Project Management with many real world examples that were directly relevant to the Cayman Islands,” added Mr Cimolini.

“The attendees left the seminar with new ideas on how to apply Professional Project Management principles to their daily work. These principles, when applied properly, lead to projects being done on time, within budget and to a high standard of quality.”

Local project managers are in the process of forming a local chapter on Project Management Institute (PMI) with ongoing recruiting efforts. It is one of the world’s leading non- profit professional associations for Project Management with an international membership of more than 125,000.

Additionally, PMI offers two professional certifications, the Project Management Professional (PMP) and the Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM), a marketable qualification to employers.

The local project management chapter will be organizing seminars targeted to both the practitioners of project management and the consumers of project management services. Mentoring will be offered to persons wanting to attain PMP and CAPM certification. Outreach programs will be organized to introduce high school students and the public to project management.

Anyone interested in joining the local chapter of PMI may contact Patrick Cimolini at 244-2238 or by email at patrick.cimolini@gov.ky
