The appearance of world champion skateboarder, Tony Hawk brought the crowds flocking to Grand Harbour on Saturday 23 April.

They were there to see Mr Hawk help perform the opening ceremony at the brand new Black Pearl Skate and Surf Park at the magnificent Grand Harbour complex.

Among the other celebrities at the opening ceremony were Leader of Government Business the Hon McKeeva Bush, Mr Michael Bell, owner of the Black Pearl park and nine other top line skateboard stars.

After the official ribbon cutting ceremony and cheque presentation, Mr Hawk along with Steve Nesser, Kevin Staab, Mike Vallely, Shaun Stulz, Alex Chamlers, Chet Childress, Omar Hassan, Darren Navarrette and Matt Dove treated the crowds to an exhibtion of their skateboarding skills.

Prior to all that, the Park was officially blessed by Father Mike Molnar and Father Graeme Thomson. There was also a public participation section of events including quizzes, games and activities that gave the public the opportunity to win some great autographed gear.

The skateboard park is a world-class facility and is the second largest of its kind in the world.

It has a beginner, intermediate and advanced bowl to master and a huge street course - in fact everything you need to tailslide, grind, rail and kickflip your way into skater heaven. And for those wanting the ultimate challenge there is also the 20ft high vert ramp!
