The groundbreaking for a major new community called Camana Bay took place on Wednesday 27 April. Cayman Government representatives, as well as HE the Governor Bruce Dinwiddy, Hon McKeeva Bush, Leader of Government Business and Minister of Tourism, Environment, Development and Commerce joined with representatives of Dart Management for the ceremony.
The project began a decade ago, when Dart Realty (Cayman) Ltd. took the first step by establishing a 26-acre nursery on Grand Cayman used to propagate the vegetation for the landscaped gardens that are an integral part of the development.
Altogether the project will take about 30 years to complete, and will cover 300 acres of land.
“Today is the first step towards the development of a town that will serve as a home and social centre for generations of new residents and Caymanians alike,” said John Papesh, Vice President of marketing and public affairs for Dart Realty (Cayman) Ltd.
“His Excellency the Governor and the Honourable McKeeva Bush have played an integral role in enabling us to be where we are today. We value their support because, first and foremost, Camana Bay is a town of Cayman, for Cayman.
“Camana Bay will be developed carefully over the next few decades. We will take the time and care necessary throughout this entire process, together with the people of Cayman, to make sure that we create a quality community where life will flourish for years to come.”
Mr Papesh also pointed out that the groundbreaking was chosen for this date to help in announcing the Camana Bay Development Open House that will take place on 4 May. “We want to extend an invitation to all Cayman Contractors, suppliers, vendors and labourers to come and learn more specifics on the community and the development timeline, as well as to register interest,” he said.
Dart Realty describes Camana Bay as “a mixed-use, master planned community.” The development will stretch from Seven Mile Beach to North Sound, covering 300 acres. It will include residential neighborhoods, a new international school, parks and a Town Centre that will provide the people of Grand Cayman with one central location for shopping, dining, business and entertainment.
The first stage of the $200 million town centre is scheduled to open at the end of 2006.
Hon McKeeva Bush, Leader of Government Business said, “I would like to congratulate the Dart family and Dart Management on this groundbreaking event for Camana Bay. This project shows the confidence the Dart family continues to have in the stability of the economy of the Cayman Islands.”
Mr Bush went on to say that he was thankful to God for giving him the opportunity to support this development and that he looked forward to the future, when the development would be creating a source of revenue for Caymanians.
