The run-up to the annual Lions Swim Meet on Grand Cayman always includes a
competition on Cayman Brac, where almost every young swimmer, high school and
primary level, from both Sister Islands has a chance to compete.
The event was held this year on 14 May at the Government pool. It was
sponsored as always by the Lions Club of Grand Cayman, assisted by the Lions
of Cayman Brac, swim coaches on the Island and volunteers.
The High School Champion Boy and Girl were Emilio Ritch and Mya Dunkley and
Primary Champions were Nicholas Scott and Lucille Martin. Emilio also won
Outstanding Swimmer for the Meet award.
rac Swim Instructor Michael Hundt told Cayman Net News: “The 28th Cayman
Brac Lions Swim Meet once again was an amazing spectacle showcasing the many
impressive talents of over 70 Cayman Brac and Little Cayman swimmers. The
Lions Clubs of Grand Cayman and Cayman Brac again went into high gear to make
certain the Meet was entertaining, safe and well organised.
“Special thanks goes to the Public Works Department of Cayman Brac who
provided a well shaded venue and a sparkling, clean pool in which to swim.
Everyone appeared to enjoy the event as evidenced by wild cheering and
smothering parental hugs for victors and finishers alike. The adult swim, a
Brac tradition, was especially appreciated with our small pool completely
occupied in this event.
“It was especially gratifying to see former primary school swimmers I
taught many years ago still willing and able to strut their stuff in the pool
with style…well, almost," he added.
Lions coordinator of this event, Steve Surrey, said: “There is a great
atmosphere here. This event is special because of the good support from
parents, and the competitiveness, the sportsmanship and the friendliness of
the competitors.”
He noted the good turnout of GC Lions, 13 of whom gave up their Saturday to
come over to help, including Lions President Gordon McLaughlin, and Rayle
Roberts, who did a great job all morning as compére.
“This is a monumental occasion. We look forward to it every year,” said GC
Lion Robert Wood. There is definitely a different atmosphere on the Brac, he
thought.
“It’s the enthusiasm of the parents and an excellent community spirit
displayed. We’ll continue as long as we are able,” he added.
