Swimmers hit the open seas for bank contest

Friday, May 27,  2005

Over 90 swimming enthusiasts of all ages competed in the 3rd Annual Butterfield Bank ‘iTopUp’ 800m Sea Swim on Saturday 21 May.

Those who braved the rain in George Town on their way to participate in the race were rewarded with clear skies and perfect sea conditions as the passing rain squall was limited to south of the Governor’s House.

CIASA Race Official Jim Fraser started the race promptly at 4pm, and the fastest swimmers of the contingent started crossing the line at Public Beach 9 minutes and 42 seconds later.

Senior National Swim-team member Kaitlyn Elphinstone led the pack shortly followed by Carifta swim-team captain Michael Lockwood and fellow swim-team member Joel Rombough. Local triathletes Helga Sergel and Marius Acker were the first Masters swimmers to finish in just over 11 minutes, followed by Peter Stafford, who put in another consistently strong swimming performance.

All participants received T-shirts and enjoyed refreshments after the race, followed by the awards ceremony where trophies were handed out to the top-three male and female finishers in each age division. Ten lucky swimmers also enjoyed winning black ‘iTopUp’ back-packs, generously donated by Butterfield Bank and distributed in a random draw.

Butterfield Bank representative Peter O’Neill stated that, “Butterfield Bank was pleased to support the ever popular sport of open water swimming in the Cayman Islands, and looked forward to supporting next year’s race.”

The next Open Water Sea Swim on the Cayman Islands Amateur Swimming Association’s calendar is the “Cayman Recovery Mile Sea Swim”, being held on Saturday, the 18 June, 2005. Interested swimmers are urged to visit the official race website at www.flowersseaswim.com for further information on this race.
