So close for Cayman National Rugby Team
Thursday, June 16, 2005
The Cayman National Rugby team was recently in the Bahamas, playing in the
Northern Caribbean Championships, which also served as a first-round qualifier
for the 2007 Rugby World Cup to be held in France.
The Cayman National team got their campaign off to a rocky start when they
went down 12-23 to hosts Bahamas in the first game, played on Sunday, June 5.
However, the match between Jamaica and Bermuda ended in a draw, which kept
the Cayman team’s hopes alive and in the tournament.
The team played their second match against Jamaica on Wednesday 8 June. The
team played a hard game, spurred on by their loss in the match against
Bahamas. This time things went much better for the national team, as they won
the match in convincing fashion, outscoring Jamaica 18-8.
The Cayman National team faced their last opponents of the tournament on
Saturday 11 June, when they played Bermuda. They managed to carry forward the
momentum from their win against Jamaica, and managed to beat their opponents
12-6.
Meanwhile, Jamaica did the Cayman team a favour when it dispatched the
hosts and log leaders Bahamas, who lost their first game of the tournament
when they went down 3-5 to Jamaica in a low-scoring encounter.
This left Cayman and Bahamas locked together at the top of the log, with
two wins each, and therefore an equal number of points. The Cayman team’s
first loss of the tournament against their hosts Bahamas now came back to
haunt them, as the Bahamas’ better record against the Cayman national team
meant that the Bahamas would be crowned winners of the North Caribbean
Championships.
As champions the Bahamas will next play the winner of the Southern
Caribbean Championships in order to try and progress to the next round of
qualification for the 2007 Rugby World Cup in France.
