One of the major aims of the recent Deloitte Cayman Sevens Rugby tournament was to promote the growth of the sport among the youth of Grand Cayman.

A first time sponsor of the Deloitte Sevens, Digicel, took this mission to heart, not only through their sponsorship of the Presidents VII team, but also through more direct involvement in promoting rugby at schools.

Local high school students interested in rugby had a chance to see international-level players live in action thanks to 40 free tickets to the matches distributed at St. Ignatius High School by Digicel. The sponsor also put on a rugby clinic with the players on the Presidents VII team.

During the clinic, St. Ignatius High School students had a chance to learn about the sport of rugby from players who regularly compete at the international level in Europe and around the world.

The President’s VII team was unique in its composition, in that it featured five local and five international players. This was an ideal way to expose local players to the extremely high level of play that has become the hallmark of the Cayman Sevens tournament.

Participation in the Deloitte Cayman Sevens alongside professional and international players was a highlight of the U-19 Sevens Academy run by the Cayman Rugby Union.

Commenting on the company’s sponsorship of the tournament, Digicel Cayman CEO JD Buckley said: “The Deloitte Rugby Sevens is now an important way to attract youth players to the sport. We are especially pleased to be sponsors of the Presidents VII team for the development of local players and giving them the chance to play with international stars of the sport.”
