LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Rudolph Dixon responds to Police shake up
Monday, July 11, 2005
Dear Sir,
I write in response to an article contained in Thursday’s edition of the
Cayman Net News, dated 7th July 2005, and captioned “Police Shake Up” that
contained numerous inaccuracies, innuendo and sensational statements.
This has been disruptive and distractive at a time when all Members and the
command of the RCIPS are intensely focused on addressing the increase in
crimes and reducing the fear of crime.
It is unfortunate that despite the very open-door policy that the RCIPS,
including myself, have maintained with the media, inclusive of the Net News,
no one from that Newspaper sought to check or clarify these stories with
either a responsible source or myself.
Let me assure the public that there is not an exodus of Senior Officers of
the RCIPS resigning over the next few weeks, as alleged by the Net News,
publication. Furthermore, I wish to let the public know that I have no
intentions of retiring from the RCIPS at this time, as erroneously stated in
this newspaper (Net News).
Also contained in the catalogue of errors of the article in question, is
the assertion that the PPM Government has instigated this “Shake Up”.
I look forward to working with the new Government and at the Commissioner’s
level, this has already begun with much success.
However, His Excellency, the Governor is the constitutional head of the
RCIPS and therefore, it is erroneous and malicious to suggest that the
so-called “Shake Up” would have been instigated by the political arm of the
Government.
The Press Conference scheduled for 7 July, as mentioned in the Net News
publication, was planned to inform the public of what the Police were doing to
address the increase in crime and the fear of crime and to share the
organization’s strategic direction for the short-term, but had to be postponed
because of the approach of Hurricane Dennis to the Cayman Islands. It has been
rescheduled for Monday, 11th July 2005.
I regret that a sector of the media would seek to cause undue anxiety in
the minds of the public and the police at this time. I wish to reiterate that
The Police High Command is committed to continuing to be transparent in its
operations where practicable, and will be at the media’s disposal to provide
factual information when called upon.
Rudolph Dixon
Editors Note: Cayman Net News acknowledges that our source may indeed be
incorrect regarding Mr Dixon’s resignation or retirement although his name has
been cited now on three occasions to us. However, the source inside the RCIPS
insists that several senior officers are about to leave the force. We do not
consider keeping the public informed about the problems facing their police
service sensationalism, with some thirty vacant positions, escalating reports
of violent gun crime, 22 burglaries reported in one-day alone last week not to
mention the reported theft of a police officer’s gun from a locked safe.
Moreover Net News made repeated attempts to contact senior officers regarding
the information given to us by the source. Meanwhile no one returned our calls
including Mr Dixon before press time.
