Free advice at health presentation at CTMH on Protecting Children’s skin

Dr. Sonia Kapoor
Friday,  July 15, 2005

Common disorders affecting the skin, hair and nails of children will be the topic of discussion at a free community health presentation at the Chrissie Tomlinson Memorial Hospital on Thursday, 21 July.

Dr. Sonia Kapoor will be presenting this session at the hospital from 7.00 pm -8.00 pm.

The presentation will particularly focus on safety for children during the summer months after a study released in June by the non-profit organisation Sun Safety Alliance showed that the number of Americans using sunscreen, a primary protector against skin cancer, has declined over the past year — while the number of Americans, including children, being diagnosed with skin cancer has risen to an all-time high.

According to Dr. Kapoor, children are at a higher risk of skin ailments during the summer due to the severity and intensity of ultraviolet rays.

“Skin cancer is increasingly striking younger people. Parents must be diligent about protecting their children and themselves in the sun and establishing year-round “safe sun practices,” such as staying inside during mid-day when the sun is the hottest, wearing a hat and sunglasses when outside, and applying sunscreen frequently—SPF 15 or higher for adults and SPF 30 or higher for children.

The presentation will also address how to recognize other common diseases such as impetigo, ringworm, eczema, head lice, acne, moles and warts. Since starting a paediatric dermatology clinic back in May 2005, Dr. Kapoor has seen tens of children with skin diseases and many in the latter stages of contagious disease. “Most children will encounter a skin disease at some time during their childhood. These diseases can be potentially contagious and can cause discomfort, pain, disfigurement and disability”.

The presentation is aimed at parents, guardians and those who work with children.
