LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Perhaps it is time to call in the military

Friday,  July 15, 2005

Dear Sir,

Haven’t we heard all of this before? Promising to get tough on crime and putting more officers (including senior officers) on patrol, yet crime has risen. I really don’t think that this will be enough.

The Cayman Islands is facing a major rise in lawlessness, a few cosmetic changes, while commendable, will not get to the root of the problem. These changes will continue for a few weeks then it will be back to ‘normal’.

Tropical Storm Emily (soon to be Hurricane) is approaching; if it hits us the looting and general lawlessness after Ivan will seem like kindergarten. An already considerably depleted RCIPS will not be able to cope.

You can rely on untrained volunteers for only so long. Perhaps it is time to call in the military.
