Two-time Olympian, Cydonie Mothersill, blazes her
way down the track.

ALTHOUGH much attention has been lavished on the athletes competing in the
Island Games recently, Cayman athletes have been taking medals all over the
globe.
Cayman’s 200m sprinter Cydonie Mothersill captured gold at the CAC Track
and Field Championships in the Bahamas on Monday night.
Cydonie's time of 22.26, though wind-assisted, allowed her to successfully
defend the CAC title that she took last year. However, it was her time in the
heats, 22.39, that set a new national record, according to team manager Rayle
Roberts.
Christine Amertil (Bahamas) was second in 22.64 seconds. Peta-Gaye Dowdie
from Jamaica took home the bronze with 22.72 seconds, and her teammate
Sheri-Ann Brooks came fourth in 22.99 seconds.
Two-time CAC Champion Mothersill got off to a blazing start. While Amertil
tried her best to stay with her, Mothersill, showing fine form, powered down
the home stretch, not allowing any of the field to come close.
“I feel really good. I felt as if I had a little bit more in the tank,”
Mothersill said.
Mothersill is now on her way to Europe for several competitions, including
the World Track and Field Championships this August.
Although the rest of the Cayman team did not medal, Roberts said the Cayman
Islands Athletic Association (CIAA) was pleased with their results.
“The team did very well, considering this was the first time most of them
had competed at this level. Cydonie has set a foundation for the months to
come. She blew away the field,” Roberts said.
“The wind was really bad. Either times were wind-assisted or there was a
serious crosswind,” he added.
Minister of Sports Alden McLaughlin applauded Cydonie Mothersill for
garnering the gold. “Any day one of our athletes is able to make such an
achievement is a good day. It asserts that we are the best in our region. I
would also like to thank the rest of the team for doing their best.”
