LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Editorial response absolutely correct
Monday, July 18, 2005
Dear Sir,
I totally agree with Derrick Powell’s response in Friday 15 July’s newspaper, entitled “Your editorial is absolutely correct”.
Mr Powell made his comments and stated that “there is such a thing as ‘the Cayman way’”, without bashing anyone in particular.
It is a fact that each country has its own way of doing things, and if someone goes to another person’s country, I too agree that you should accept the people for who they are and how they live, without trying to impose your own culture on them, and without bashing them as well.
Mr Powell was courteous, and as an ex-pat I feel comfortable in that his remarks were not negative, as some persons’ remarks often are.
My country has its own culture, and I would want those who are visiting, or those who go there to live, to respect our culture without trying to make us feel that we are from some subservient country, lacking knowledge, and try to change us.
Cayman is a quaint little Island, and even though it has its problems, be it crime or hurricanes, whatever the problems may be, there are reasons why other people have come here to live.
To say it plainly, some just love the island. So appreciate it for what it is, respect it, and learn to embrace it and its people.
Sheri Francis
