Seven new members joined the Lions club of Cayman Brac at a ceremony to
mark the handing over of the reins of Club President.
The official Installation of Officers, including President, was conducted
by John Ebanks, founder of the Lions Club of Grand Cayman, who accepted the
oath of new President Mark Tibbetts and the twelve other Officers and Board of
Directors of the club.
The seven new members inducted during the ceremony were Srinivasulu Bata,
Pier-Ann Brown, Yvette Gayle, Sedonnie Raynor-Dias, Kevin Roberts, Donnie
Smith and Lois Thompson.
They bring the total membership up to fifteen, plus three members who are
not currently living on the Island but remain supportive.
In his report for the 2004/2005 year, out-going President Leathan Martin said
that, as with everything else in the Caymans, the club’s activities this year
have been dominated by Hurricane Ivan and its aftermath.
“One project completed this year that was started well before the storm was
the addition to Stacey Tibbetts’ house, which was finished by Robert Banks and
his crew late in the year. The club donated all the building materials Robert
required.”
Mr Martin welcomed new members and thanked Lion Fred Wissing, who moved
back to the US for medical reasons, for all his hard work.
The club’s first activity after Hurricane Ivan was to bring the community
together in a fun evening of entertainment. More than $1,700 raised for the
recovery effort was presented to Lions members on Grand Cayman.
The following month, on 21 November, a large turnout of Lions members
attended the funeral of former Lion Glennie Dilbert, said Mr Martin.
“Our next major activity, after a good showing at Memorial Day, was our
Christmas events. Backed by a highly successful Begging Day, we embarked on
our usual Christmas program, with gifts for the elderly and shut-ins, as well
as our Santa parade round the Island to present gifts to the Brac’s children.”
Support for the Christmas programme came from CB Power and Light Company
and Cayman Airways Limited.
“Our dinner at Heritage House was a fun evening, and we were able to give
our left-over food to the Cuban refugees who were being kept at the Panama
Canal. Lion Mark said this was gratefully received and eaten.”
One of the club’s major projects to spearhead Emergency Responses on the
Brac came to fruition this year, with the introduction of emergency responder
kits to both the police and fire services. Following this success, they plan
to provide three heart defibrillators to emergency response teams, as well as
the training to use both them and the kits they helped to provide.
A highly successful Lions Swim Meet in 2004 saw eleven members of the Brac
2 x pixclub turning out to provide assistance to their fellow Lions from Grand
Cayman, he said.
“Last month we had a variety show at the Aston Rutty Centre which raised
almost $3,000 for Virginia Morin to help her cover some of the costs of her
cancer treatments. We were able to have Andy Martin headline the evening which
was attended by more than 250 people.”
MC for the evening was Deputy District Commissioner Ernie Scott.
