Campbell takes 100m victory

Warming up in Helsinki’s World Championships Stadium last week Olympic 200 metres champion Veronica Campbell, Davian Clarke and Vonette Dixon clocked some impressive wins. Campbell, a bronze medal winner in the Olympic 100m final in Athens won the 100m in 11.12 seconds, ahead of American Muna Lee (11.39) and Angela Daigle (11.48). In the men’s 400m, Clarke took victory in 45.53, leaving Saudi Arabia’s Hamdan Al-Bishi Hamdan (45.61) in his wake. Dixon, the 2002 Commonwealth Games silver medallist, justified her third place finish at the National Championships with victory in the women’s 100m hurdles.

Fastest man won’t compete

Now the fastest man in the world, Jamaica’s Asafa Powell, has pulled out of the 100 metre race at the IAAF orld Athletics Championships, which started this weekend in Finland. Powell, who broke the World 100m record in with a time of 9.77 seconds on 14 June, pulled up with a groin injury in London recently. Doctors said he suffered a two-and-a-half centimetre rip in his muscl. He flew to Munich, Germany for treatment from homeopathic specialist Dr. Müller-Wohlfhart.

Girls sweep Pan Am champs

Sprint hurdlers Latoya Greaves and Natasha Ruddock opened Jamaica’s medal count at the 2005 Pan American Junior Championships in Windsor, Canada with impressive performances. Greaves, of The Queen’s School, and Ruddock of St. Jago High won gold and silver respectively in the 100m hurdles, securing personal best times. Heading into the Championships with a season best 13.60 and into the final with 13.54 seconds, Greaves, a finalist from the last Pan Am Champs, produced a career best 13.38 for gold.

Sun shines for Jamaica in the sunshine state

Florida witnessed the power of Jamaica’s young Sunshine Girls from inside the Broward County Convention Centre in Fort Lauderdale the home of the 2005 World Youth Netball Championships. Ranked No 2 in the world the Girls topped off Pool B with ease after a 79-16 win over Canada. It was the third win of the championships for the Jamaicans who have so far managed 98-6 and 48-37 victories over Bermuda and South Africa respectively.
