LETTER TO THE EDITOR

I would like to commend Mr Dixon and his staff

Wednesday,  August 3, 2005

Dear Sir,

I would like to commend Mr Dixon and his staff for actually doing something that police departments around the world rarely ever do and that is meeting with communities in general and actually giving them a voice that can be heard.

I hope the people who didn't show up don't complain when changes happen and the police are doing their jobs.

en I read that the people want to have armed police officers on patrol, the public, as always, don’t understand what they are being told when they ask why. But let me get to the point: police with guns, then bullet proof vests, off duty officers in supermarkets with a sidearm, on the beach with family with a concealment pouch, sleeping at night with cold steel under your pillow.

Is that straight forward enough? If not, then think about how would you like some one to take pot shots at you for just doing your job?

It might sound very foolish but remember guns were made for one reason only – to kill men and from there adapted to hunting and recreation but as far as being a tool never.

I have been an officer for six years in the state of Florida and only fired my weapon once in the line of duty and if I could have been put through that scenario again would do every thing I could to prevent those last 10 seconds from happening. Mainly a firearm is used for intimidation and to give police an upper-hand when a situation becomes life threatening. So, please as a stranger, a police officer and as a fellow human being don’t go down that path; you might just get lost if you lose sight of where you are coming from.

As for the statement of highly-trained bad gangs – gangs according to many dictionaries – but going as far as saying that they are highly-trained, no. Organized maybe, but not highly trained and there is a very big difference.

Now, even though your community is small compared to others, solving six out of seven homicides would be great. With 99 percent of crimes being solved, the public should stand up and applaud the police for their efforts, at least even saying thank you or even saying great job.

And as for the AK-47 that was found, it is maybe time for the officers that participated in those entry searches to step it up a notch because finding an AK is not like finding a Saturday night special. It will always have you thinking about the risks of the job but with that I would like to say that we didn’t take that oath of protect and serve the public interest for no reason.
There is another issue that your island has to take care of and that is looking for another Commissioner of Police.

But in my view of things, by just reading the articles from various news outlets on the island, you don’t have to look too far or even in another country because Mr Dixon appears to be the most exemplary candidate for the job and there is no one that teaches experience – especially in law enforcement.
